Mall of America Creek (aka Hust Creek and Ike’s Creek) is a small stream that has maintained a brook trout population since trout were reintroduced in 2007. This project will protect trout habitat and limit erosion in the stream. TCTU and MNTU have played an important role in protecting the stream and habitat of brook trout.
We’ll plan to meet at the USFWS Bass Ponds parking lot. The trail conditions are variable. Meeting at the parking lot at 11:00 will help us either carpool or walk (1/2 mile) to the stream together. The gate is locked so please arrive on time.
We will help protect a stream bank from further erosion by placing and securing coir logs. Volunteers will also remove debris from a partially plugged culvert. Volunteers should be prepared to place coir logs (70 lbs. – 90 lbs.) at directed locations along the stream bank. Once in place, we’ll secure logs with stakes and twine. Volunteers may help remove woody debris from a culvert and may need to use a shovel.
