On March 11, House bill HF3704 to regulate Neonicotinoid insecticides will receive a hearing by the House Agriculture and Finance Policy Committee. This hearing is a big deal. Join us at the hearing to show support for the legislation and make it clear that neonics are not our friends!
We will be meeting at the main accessible entrance under the front steps on the south side of the Capitol at 12:30. We will then go through security screening and proceed to meeting room G3. The meeting will commence at 1 pm sharp. Parking information and other helpful tips will be emailed to you when you register.
Neonicotinoid (“neonic”) insecticide seed treatments are used on roughly 11 million+ acres across Minnesota each year. Less than 5% of the insecticide is taken up into the crop--the rest of it makes its way into the groundwater and into our streams. Neonics are highly toxic to insects, including aquatic insects; it has been estimated that one ounce can kill 6 billion bees. Our chapter has joined 30+ other conservation organizations in the Campaign for Cleaner Seed. Thanks in part to the efforts of this coalition, bills have been introduced in both the Minnesota House (HF3704) and Senate (SF4052) to reduce the use of neonic-treated seeds and other harmful uses of neonics.
