For about ten days in mid June, the Straight River in North Central Minnesota comes alive with trophy trout feeding on Hexagenia Limbata mayflies. Unrivaled in size and population, Hexes account for as much as 1/3 of the yearly calorie intake of the trout in the river. The fishing isn't easy: the hatch nearly always occurs after dark, and the best spots are surrounded by boot-sucking, mosquito-infested swamps.  Some good advice goes a long way!

Ron Miller will go over tactics for safely and successfully fishing the Hex hatch on the Straight.  He will also cover other hatches and fishing opportunities on the Straight and give us some background on the ecology of this unique stream.

Ron began fishing in central Iowa for bullheads with the usual gear.  In 1977, he moved to Fargo and he began fishing the Straight in 1980. He started tying Hex flies in the early 80’s . By the mid 80’s he was taking vacation for one to two weeks during the middle of June just to fish the Hex.  In 1992 his family purchased a lake cabin about 20 minutes from the Straight River, and he expanded his fishing there to include at least once on most weekends, one week in August and another in September. He has caught trout in the Straight from the opener in April to the end of the season in September.  He has fished for trout in 17 states and 6 countries, but has yet to find a river as fascinating and challenging as the Straight.

Our meeting will be in-person, with a Zoom option for those who prefer to attend remotely.

The Chapter meeting will start at 7 pm, with 10 minutes of "virtual lobby time" to give online participants time to log on. In-person participants are invited to join us for social time and food/drink at the Crooked Pint (on your own dime) from 5 pm onward.

TCTU Chapter meetings are open to anybody, but if you are not a TU member, we'd be delighted if you would join!  For a special introductory offer to join TU, click here

Chapter meetings are free of charge.  However, donations are appreciated to offset the costs of meetings and to support our mission of cold water conservation.  To donate to our chapter, click here.
