GBTU 2026 Habitat Day #3
Details
Dear Green Bay Trout Unlimited Members and Supporters!
We are excited to announce details for our third 2026 habitat improvement project!!
1st S. Br. Oconto R. Habitat Project:
The Green Bay Chapter of Trout Unlimited (GBTU) will be partnering with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) for a workday on the First South Branch Oconto River. We will be removing a user-made bridge that is backing up water and creating a barrier to fish movement.
Location: Parking will be at the following location: Click Here for Link
From Mountain, WI, take Highway W west approximately 1.25 miles and turn north on Whiffen Lane. Follow Whiffen Lane to the parking area off the two-track road. The road is passable in small SUVs, such as a Ford Escape or Honda CR-V, but sedans such as a Ford Focus or Honda Civic are not recommended. If needed, we can carpool people to the site from where the pavement ends on Whiffen Lane.
Work Planned: U.S. Forest Service employees will use chainsaws to remove bridge lumber as needed. The lumber will be brought to waiting ATVs and hauled to the appropriate location. Volunteers will then help remove rocks from the middle of the channel to restore a free-flowing stream and remove the barrier.
What to Bring: Please bring waders and work gloves. Eye and ear protection are also recommended; extra protection will be available if needed.
- We will be at the project site, rain or shine.
- Beverages and a grilled lunch are provided for all volunteers.
- Please let Paul Kruse (GBTU Habitat Project Chair) know if you are attending, so we have enough food and beverages for lunch
