The Kiap-TU-Wish and Twin Cities chapters of TU invite you to a special joint chapter meeting: an update on the most important habitat restoration effort in the Upper Midwest so far this century!

The Kinnickinnic River rises in springs north of I-94 and flows southwest through the city of River Falls, Wisconsin before emptying into the St. Croix.  All 25 miles of the Kinni are a Class I trout stream. The river has been classified by the Wisconsin DNR as an outstanding resource water--the only river on its list to flow through a city of over 15,000 residents.  Many of us consider the Kinni to be our home water:  it is just 45 minutes from downtown Minneapolis and one of the best trout streams in the Midwest.

Our chapters are working with the Kinni Corridor Collaborative and a number of other organizations to remove the Powell Dam in River Falls, and restore a mile of trout stream that has been covered by its impoundment for nearly a century.  The demolition is planned in early 2023, with stream restoration work following immediately thereafter.  Along with restoring a prime stretch of publicly accessible trout water, the benefits of this project will include sediment control and a reduction in summertime water temperatures in the lower Kinni.

Duke Welter will update us on the history of the project, current status, and plans for the next 6-12 months.  TCTU Chapter President Bob Luck will also provide a brief fishing report on the Kinni, including information on access points, hatches, and trout populations.  (Spoiler alert:  the fishing has been excellent).

Duke Welter worked as a lawyer in private practice before embarking on a second career as Outreach Coordinator for TU’s Driftless Area Restoration Effort, (TUDARE).  He recently retired from TU and is now on Act III, serving as a Director of the Kinni Corridor Collaborative and the fund raising chair for the Lower Kinnickinnic Restoration Effort.   Duke has served as vice-chair of TU's National Board of Trustees and as chair of its National Leadership Council. He has been recognized by Trout Unlimited as its “National Conservation Volunteer of the Year”, and was presented with TU’s highest award for volunteer leadership. The River Alliance of Wisconsin named him the “River Champion of the Decade”.  When he is not advocating for rivers, Duke can be found casting his 4-weight in streams near his home in Viroqua, Wisconsin.

Our meeting will be in-person, with a Zoom option for those who prefer to attend remotely.
The Chapter meeting will start at 7 pm, with 10 minutes of "virtual lobby time" to give online participants time to log on. In-person participants are invited to join us for social time and food/drink at the Crooked Pint (on your own dime) from 5 pm onward.

TU Chapter meetings are open to anybody, but if you are not a TU member, we'd be delighted if you would join!  For a special introductory offer to join TU, click here

Chapter meetings are free of charge.  However, a donation to the Lower Kinnickinnic Restoration Effort would be highly appreciated!  To donate, click here.
