Every year around this time, we ask Kasey Yallaly of the Wisconsin DNR to give us an update on Western Wisconsin. This year, she is going to gnurd out on the Rush River, one of the most productive trout streams in the country, and a favorite destination for Twin Cities anglers.

Kasey and her team conducted a creel study in the summer of 2021 (you may recall seeing those survey forms tucked under your windshield wipers!).  They collected information on river usage, angler catch and harvest rates, and angler demographics, and compared this information with previous creel surveys done in the late 1980s and early '90s.  Angling preferences have drastically changed since then, with a greater focus on catch and release. Kasey will share the insights gleaned from the creel survey, and talk about how they can be used to manage and improve the fishery. She will also be happy to answer any other questions you have about Western Wisconsin.

Kasey Yallaly started with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources as a Senior Fisheries Biologist in 2018 located in the Baldwin office. Her area of coverage includes St. Croix, Pierce and western Dunn counties. Some of the larger trout streams that she manages includes the Rush, Kinnickinnic, Willow and Eau Galle rivers. Before coming to Wisconsin, she received her Master’s degree at Southern Illinois University. Prior to that, she worked in northern Idaho as a fisheries technician in the Coeur d’Alene office helping manage St. Joseph and Coeur d’Alene rivers’ trout fisheries. She began her career in fisheries in southeast Missouri working on large rivers including the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio and Illinois rivers.

The Chapter meeting will start at 7 pm, with 10 minutes of "virtual lobby time" to give online participants time to log on. In-person participants are invited to join us for social time and food/drink (on your own dime) from 5 pm onward.
