Chapter Meeting - The Reintroduction of Sturgeon in the Milwaukee River
Details
Please join us for the SEWTU April Chapter Meeting on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at Crawdaddy’s on Greenfield Avenue in West Allis.
This month’s meeting will feature a presentation on the Milwaukee River Sturgeon Project (2026) by Mary Hollenbeck and Emma Milsapp of Riveredge Nature Center.
Mary Hollenbeck is the Citizen Science Manager at Riveredge and the onsite coordinator for the Lake Sturgeon Rehabilitation Project, a long‑term partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources working to restore lake sturgeon to the Milwaukee River after more than a century of absence. More than 22,000 sturgeon have been released into the watershed over the past 20 years, with encouraging signs of fish now returning to the river.
Joining her is Emma Milsapp, a first‑year PhD student in the Aquatic Sciences program at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Emma’s research focuses on juvenile lake sturgeon movement and habitat use within the Milwaukee area, and she brings experience from fisheries research projects across the country.
