Trout anglers in the Upper Midwest have observed declines in insect hatches on their favorite streams.  Is this just “Rosy Retrospection” bias, or is something more insidious at work?  At this meeting, Clarke Garry and Kent Johnson will discuss the current state of knowledge regarding aquatic insect populations, threats to these populations, and some possible solutions. They will then tie this general regional overview to the multi-year (2022-2025) project they have been conducting to understand the past and present health of aquatic insect populations in the Kinnickinnic River.

If you plan to come in person, please join us early for a Streamkeepers Happy Hour at 5:30 pm. Are you interested in learning more about monitoring streams during 2024?  The Streamkeepers team will demonstrate testing water for temperature, pH, chloride, phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, alkalinity, hardness, and water clarity.

Clarke Garry has a B.A. in Zoology from the University of Missouri and a
Ph.D. in Entomology, from the University of Wisconsin.  He is a Professor of Biology Emeritus at UW-River Falls, having retired after 30 years teaching General Biology, Zoology, and Entomology. Clarke came to appreciate the insects and crustaceans of the Kinnickinnic River beginning with group projects carried out by his students on the South Fork. In 2001 and 2002 he completed comprehensive macroinvertebrate surveys of the Kinni, documenting insect and crustacean populations inhabiting the mainstem. He contributed regularly to the entomology column of Midwest Fly Fishing magazine. His essays are available in book form: In the Kinnickinnic, Stories of a River and Its Insect Life. Kent Johnson has a  B.A. in Biology from St. Olaf College and an M.S. in Aquatic Biology & Aquatic Toxicology from Michigan Technological University. He worked 38 years with Metropolitan Council Environmental Services in St. Paul as an Environmental Scientist and Manager, developing, implementing, and directing water quality monitoring programs for large rivers, streams, and lakes before retiring in 2017.  He has been an active volunteer with Trout Unlimited for the past 35 years, and has been a key player in protecting the Kinnickinnic River and implementing monitoring programs for Trout Streams throughout the Driftless Area.  Clarke will have copies of his classic book on Aquatic Insects "In the Kinnickinnic" available for sale at the in-person meeting.  He takes cash or checks.

The Chapter meeting will start at 7 pm, with 10 minutes of "virtual lobby time" to give online participants time to log on.
