Chapter Meeting: All About Hay Creek

From its source near Goodhue to its mouth at the Mississippi River in Red Wing, Hay Creek is 16 miles of Class I heaven for trout anglers.  The trout like it, too!  Just an hour from downtown St. Paul, Hay Creek was the site of the first-ever trout stream habitat restoration project in Minnesota, and has been the subject of intensive TLC from the DNR, Minnesota TU, and the Twin Cities chapter.  The work continues, and we have big plans for the future.  Hay Creek is a terrific all-season fishing destination with great access, terrific scenery, and lots (and we mean lots) of trout, including some surprisingly big ones.

Doug will kick us off with a conservation overview of Hay Creek including history, land use, easements and habitat projects, and future plans to further protect and restore the creek.  He will be followed by Bob, who will talk about how, when, where and why to fish Hay Creek.

Doug Moran is a board member and the Habitat Coordinator of Twin Cities TU.  He also chairs the Habitat Committee of our State Council, Minnesota Trout Unlimited.  Doug is an avid outdoorsman whose father taught him the importance of giving back to protect our resources.  His personal motto is "Get Stuff Done".  (note:  the middle word was edited to make it suitable for a family-oriented publication)

Bob Luck is a current board member and past president of Twin Cities TU.  He has fished Hay Creek over 50 times in the last five years.  Not enough, but a good start.  Bob is the author of a book of essays on fishing the Driftless Area called Woolly Buggers Don't Count, available at local fly shops and online at pocketwaterpress.com.
