Derek will talk a little about fishing in the fall and trout redds. We will tie "Trout Candy," a fly that slays big picky trout, and teach you how to fish with it.
Hello, my name is Derek Liebich and I am 20 years old. My fly fishing journey started when I was 6 years old when my Dad brought me out to the Big Wood River. Since then I have never slowed down. I continued fishing throughout high school, and when I graduated I moved to Colorado for college. During my summers I had the amazing opportunity to work at and guide for a fly shop located in Breckenridge. It was there that I was able to develop my own personal style and flair for fly fishing which has continued to foster my love for the sport. I love introducing new people to fly fishing as well as teaching people of all ages and skills. My personal goal when it comes to fishing is to challenge people's expectations about what can be done with a fly rod. I love targeting any species that I can find. This summer alone I recorded 11 different species on the fly in Idaho, and I even hooked into a sturgeon. With all of these different species, I still find myself drawn to the tricky tail-waters and huge trout that can be found in multiple river systems around Boise. The trout candy has become a go-to fly for these picky fish. 4 of my 5 biggest trout this year have all been on the trout candy in runs that I had floated with multiple other flies that I had thought would be effective but with no luck. I am really excited to continue teaching the sport that I love and hopefully inspire more people to fish and protect the amazing fisheries that surround us!
