West Kill
Town of West Kill, New York
Greene County - Tributary of the Schoharie
NYS DEC, Trout Unlimited and West Kill Brewing are excited to welcome volunteers out for a great Fall tree planting event on October 11th @ 10 AM. The team of NYS DEC and TU have been committed to removing barriers to trout migration and focusing on opportunities to improve and restore prime Catskill wild trout habitat on the West Kill for many years! Several of the key components to healthy trout stream are linked back to trees in the riparian (streamside) zone. The trees that our volunteers will plant on the West Kill are a specialized list of native trees and shrubs that help create future shaded canopy that cool down stream temperatures and create hiding spaces for trout, especially when water levels get low.

The day's events will be led by NYS DEC Aquatic Ecologist, Steve Swenson, who has remained steadfast in his mission to improve a beloved local watershed that holds promise for the future our native Eastern Brook Trout. We ask that you sign up so we know how many tools to bring. Be sure join us with clothes and gloves ready for work along with a reusable water bottle or beverages of your own. Once the planting is complete, we will head up to West Kill Brewing for some great hospitality and some tasty West Kill beers! If you have any questions, feel free to email TU's Northeast Engagement Coordinator Jesse Vadala: jesse.vadala@tu.org
