The Yellowstone River Whitefish Can’t Jump One Fly Open
A Celebration of a Montana Native
Hosted by the Joe Brooks Chapter of Trout Unlimited
What It Is
Not a tournament. Not even close.
This is a tongue-in-cheek, early-spring gathering of anglers celebrating Montana’s most underrated native salmonid — the mountain whitefish.
Come shake off winter, reconnect with friends, and test your skill (and humility) in the spirit of community, conservation, and good humor.
Fishing is encouraged, but not required to attend the social at The Depot in the evening.
Why We Do It
To celebrate Montana’s native salmonids, support coldwater conservation, and reunite after a long winter.
Proceeds benefit the Joe Brooks Chapter of Trout Unlimited, funding local stream restoration, youth education, and native fish initiatives.
How It Works
-
Each angler needs two flies: One to fish with for the entire day on your favorite reach of the Yellowstone. One to contribute to the community fly box.
-
All contributed flies will be grouped together in the evening — the Grand Prize for the event’s “Top Whitefish Enthusiast.”
-
Lose your fly, and you’re done — but the stories live on.
-
Catch-and-release only.
