Help us restore the banks of the Mianus River and combat erosion! Each winter after the holiday season, the Mianus Chapter holds our Trees for Trout collection to gather old Christmas Trees to "eco-cycle" into trout habitat and restore the streambank. Due to erosion caused by climate change and increased flood events, the river channel is some places has become too shallow and over widened - causing water temperatures to heat up rapidly in the summer.

By anchoring these old christmas trees into the sides of the river, we can actually "regrow" the streambank, tightening up the channel and increasing the velocity of the water to help keep pools deep, oxygenated, and cool enough for trout to get through the hot summer months and spawn in the fall.

These types of conservation events are fun for the whole family and very rewarding work! Nothing beats getting your feet wet in the summertime and building great habitat for our wild and native trout. All you need are a good pair of boots, gloves, and plenty of water! We'll provide the rest including all the materials we need to make this project possible.
