It has been a tough couple of centuries for Brook Trout in Minnesota, but there is some cause for hope. Our only native trout species, brook trout were extirpated from many watersheds due to poor logging and agricultural practices. As the watersheds began to recover in the 20th century, they were restocked in many streams with fish sourced from the Northeastern U.S. It has recently been discovered that heritage genetics still reside in many southeast streams. Upon this discovery, MN DNR Fisheries began to develop a heritage strain of Brook Trout in a hatchery to be used to reintroduce these genetics to streams statewide. Fourteen years later these “MN Driftless” Brook Trout will be available for stocking this summer. Melissa Wagner will provide a summary of the process and an update on the status of these reintroductions as well as plans for future evaluations and habitat improvement projects tailored towards Brook Trout management. She will also be happy to take any other questions you may have about trout in Southeastern Minnesota.
Melissa has been working for DNR Fisheries in southeast MN since 2007 and is currently the Lanesboro Area Supervisor. The Lanesboro staff is involved in all aspects of managing the valuable trout streams in the Driftless Area including stream sampling, stocking, habitat evaluations, angler easement acquisition and management, education, and working with landowners and constituents. Melissa is originally from Oakdale, MN and has a master’s degree from NDSU. She currently lives in Lanesboro with her husband and two young boys and enjoys fishing, hunting, gardening, golfing, and taking her kids on new adventures.
The Chapter meeting will start at 7 pm, with 10 minutes of "virtual lobby time" to give online participants time to log on. In-person participants are invited to join us for social time and food/drink (on your own dime) from 5 pm onward.
