Come out and lend a hand before heading to the Rabun Rendezvous! We are looking for 8 - 10 volunteers to assist with some of the final components of the Hale Ridge stream channel restoration project. In early December, a legacy ditch section on Metcalf Creek was plugged and water was returned to the historic channel. This historic channel is 2 - 3 feet above the ditch. Returning flow to this channel allows for increased stream meander and floodplain connectivity, both of which help lower water temperatures. There is also hope that the historic bog complex here will be wetter and return to bog conditions over the coming years.
As this work was finalized, an undersized culvert was removed and a legacy road prism was torn up. Volunteers will be assisting in protecting the streambanks around the removed culvert and placing seed and pine straw along the decommissioned road segment. This will help reduce soil erosion and runoff and better protect the site from illegal vehicle use.
Volunteers will meet at 9:00 am at 3530 Hale Ridge Road, Clayton, GA and will work until approximately 1:00 pm. Please bring wading gear, work gloves, snacks and water.
The correct route to take is to come up Hale Ridge Road from Warwoman Road. Do not take a route onto Overflow Creek Road.
