Details
It's just past sunset and you're waiting with flyrod in ready position. Suddenly a pair of luminescent eyes come cruising down the shoreline. You cast in front to cross its path and the eyes turn, speed up and bang you are on to a 25" walleye for a good fight.
Fall is one of the best times to fly fish or spin fish from shore for walleyes on Oneida Lake - the temps are cooling off, and the fish are moving into shore at sunset to feed on baitfish.
An unusual way to try for walleye at this time of year is to wade out from shore, climb up on a step ladder and fly cast for using Clouser's or other large streamers (think Pyramid Lake) or spin cast. The step ladder (optional but not required) is helpful for casting and staying warm. It's often possible to see their glowing eyes reflecting off the last bit sunlight of the day.
If you are interested in experiencing this local fishing technique, come on out to Bernhards Bay on the north shore for a couple of hours of evening fishing.
