On Saturday, November 5th, CMTU will be planting native trees and shrubs to help restore riparian habitat and reduce erosion along the East Kill, which is a tributary of Schoharie Creek, in Jewett, NY. The stream was recently realigned after it washed out a section of County Road 17 during a flood in December 2020. Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District (GCSWCD) needs volunteers to come help re-vegetate the floodplain and stream banks. This is a great chance to get your hands dirty and help promote clean water and wild trout!
We will be meeting at a pull-off along the Schoharie Creek on Route 23A https://www.google.com/maps/dir/42.242699,-74.3298074/@42.2428333,-74.3300163,289m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!4m1!3e0 north west of Hunter, NY before carpooling over to the project site, which is a few minutes away. Parking is very limited at the project site, so if you can carpool, please do so. The address and GPS coordinates for the parking area and planting site are provided below. The planting will go until 2 PM or until we run out of plants and the chapter will provide lunch. (We usually buy pizzas for the volunteers.)
Please bring some gloves, planting tools (shovel, pick mattock, etc.), a reusable water bottle, snacks, and your best fishing stories to share with folks while we work! CMTU and GCSWCD will have some extra tools and gloves to share. We are looking forward to seeing you all in November!
Remember all volunteers receive a ticket for a special raffle at this years conservation banquet.
