Cape Cod Trout Unlimited holds a general meeting on the second Wednesday of each month from September through May. The meetings are open to the public. The meetings feature a speaker on topics ranging from exotic fishing trips and local hot spots to conservation and stream restoration.
Pizza and refreshments will be provided. Doors open at 6:00PM for a social hour prior to the presentation.
May 2023 - Presentation: Cyanobacteria and the Impact on Fish Populations
Due to climate and land use pressures, cyanobacteria blooms (HABs) are increasing in frequency, intensity, and geographic range. Monitoring programs have been established to study the presence of toxin-producing cyanobacteria in Cape Cod freshwater ponds and, in some cases, recreational use of the ponds has been suspended due to potential risks to humans and their pets. The ecological impacts of cyanobacteria toxins, however, have been less extensively studied. In recent years, the University of New Hampshire Department of Aquatic Biology under the leadership of Jim Haney and Nancy Leland have been studying the disposition of cyanobacteria toxins in pond food webs, particularly in the ponds that host anadromous alewife/herring runs. We will be discussing how fish and cyanobacteria populations are related through the food web in the Stony Brook Run. We will also discuss some of the direct impacts of cyanotoxins on fish species including trout.
