Anchorage Speaker Series: New Methods for Tracking Juvenile Kenai River Chinook Salmon
Details
Kenai River Chinook salmon runs have drastically declined in abundance and size in recent years. Fishing for Chinook salmon has faced both recreational and commercial closures. The Kenai River late-run Chinook salmon was listed as a stock of management concern.
This presentation will discuss a multi-year collaboration between the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and University of Alaska Fairbanks that used juvenile salmon acoustic telemetry system (JSATS) technology for the first time in the State of Alaska to assess Kenai River Chinook salmon smolt behavior and survivorship during downstream out-migration and early marine life stages. The goal of this project is to better understand this little studied phase of the Chinook salmon life cycle, which may help identify drivers of this population decline.
We will see you in the back room of the Peanut Farm. Beer and food will be available to purchase - and say you are with TU. Doors open at 6, with time to order food and drinks. We will begin the presentation about 6:30pm. No tickets required. TU members and non-members welcome.
