Volunteers are needed for a work day on Friday, December 16th in the headwaters of Alarka Creek, Swain County, NC. TU recently managed a project replacing a double corrugated metal pipe crossing that restricted Brook Trout movement with an open-bottom culvert that allows for full aquatic passage.

To finish up this project, volunteers are needed to install live stakes in the soil slope headwall and at strategic locations throughout the work area. Live stakes are dormant cuttings of tree and shrub species that will root the next spring. Installation requires the stakes be driven into the ground with a rubber mallet. These live stakes are vital to stabilizing and protecting the reconstructed streambanks in the project area.

Volunteers will meet on site (35.334126, -83.354511) at 10 am that morning. Live stakes and tools will be provided. Volunteer will need to bring their own waders/waterproof footwear, gloves and water. Lunch will be provided for all participants.
