Bring the family and see the latest technology in this state of the art Coho Salmon facility. The Melvin R. Samson Coho Facility began construction in 2018 and is named in honor of Mel Sampson, a respected elder and former Yakama Nation Tribal Council Chairman.  The facility is state of the art, highly efficient with 30,000 ft hatchery building, 18 early rearing tanks plus 10 grow-out tanks, 10 circular rearing ponds which assisted in strengthening fish and conserving water, 9 groundwater wells and effluent treatment designed to reuse 75% of facility water. 

Project goals at the Hatchery: Reestablish naturally spawning coho populations to historically occupied tributaries of the Upper Yakima Subbasin that support sustainable harvest and are consistent with tribal and regional ecosystem restoration objectives.  

The Trout Unlimited Headwaters Chapter supports the goals of the Yakama Nation to reestablish coho salmon back to their historical tributaries within the Yakima River Basin.
