Trout Unlimited would like to invite volunteers of all ages to attend a community tree planting event on Big Creek in Waterville, NY on October 15th.  The Town of Waterville is roughly 15 miles south of Utica and 45 miles east of Syracuse, in Oneida County. Volunteers will gather at 10 AM at Firemans Field (The park behind Waterville Family Health Center). Follow signs to a large blue TU tent. GPS -> 117 W. Main Street Waterville, NY.

We will take a brief walking tour of the project site with members of TU’s Northeast Coldwater Habitat Program, will further explain the unique features of this stream stabilization project. TU staff will guide volunteers on planting procedures and an explanation of the types of native trees selected for this planting. Trees planted along riverbanks – known as a riparian buffer – provide some of the most crucial benefits to our communities. Their roots hold back sediment, prevent erosion, and filter stormwater runoff. Their branches and leaves create a shaded canopy for the water, keeping it (and the trout) cool in the heat of Summer. As these trees grow, they sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere helping directly combat the pace of climate change. Best of all, tree plantings are fun, family-friendly ways to connect to make a meaningful difference!
*Please wear boots and bring reusable containers for water. Any additional shovels and gloves you would like to bring are welcome.*

This project was made possible with the gracious support of: Brothertowne Paving & Excavation, Village of Waterville, Town of Marshall, US Fish and Wildlife Service, NYS DEC, and Oneida County.
